What is it?
The F-1 is the visa for international students pursuing full-time academic or language studies at an institution authorized by the U.S. government to enroll foreign students.
When the school accepts you, it sends you Form I-20. With that document, the visa application (DS-160) is completed and the consulate interview is booked.
